The Hermit is a high-backed wing chair for the quiet corner. Deep-buttoned back, studded rolled arms, and camel top-grain hide over a kiln-dried hardwood frame. It shelters the shoulders and holds the warmth.

Top-grain hide is cut and built by hand, so allow roughly ±2cm.
Hide sourced from Australia, Brazil and Argentina, hand-cut and set over a kiln-dried hardwood frame. The same leather covers every surface of the piece, front and back. Built to patina and to last.
The frame. Solid hardwood, mortise-and-tenon joints with corner blocks, kiln-dried to 8 to 12 per cent moisture before a single cut.
Seat suspension. Serpentine sinuous springs across the seat base, over a non-woven fabric support, under high-resilience seat foam at 35 to 40kg per cubic metre. It is the arrangement that keeps a seat stable and holds its shape over years rather than seasons.

Is it real leather?
Yes. Top-grain cowhide with a semi-aniline finish, and the same leather on every surface of the piece, the back and sides included.
Where do the hides come from?
The raw hides come from Australia, Brazil and Argentina.
Will it peel or crack?
No. Peeling is what bonded leather and PU do, because they are a coating over a backing. Top-grain is the hide itself. Condition it every few months and keep it out of direct sun so it never dries out.
Will it look worn in, or shiny and new?
It leaves the workshop with a soft patina, and that patina deepens the more it is used.
What colours can I choose?
Eight top-grain hides, all shown above: Cognac, Whisky, Chestnut, Saddle, Walnut, Honey, Oxblood and Midnight Navy. The price on this page is the same in all eight.
Can I get a colour that is not shown?

Can I see it before I buy?
Our showroom is at 396 Princes Hwy, St Peters NSW, open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Ring first so we can tell you which pieces are on the floor. Not near Sydney? Download the hide book, and a specialist can send photos of the real hide in daylight or mock the piece up in a photo of your own room.
Is it firm or soft?
Supportive rather than sink-in. The seat is 35 to 40kg per cubic metre foam over zig-zag springs. Chesterfields sit firmer and more upright than a modern lounge, made for sitting up to talk, read or have a drink.
Will it fit through my door?
It arrives fully built, so measure the narrowest doorway, any tight turn in the hall, the stairs and the lift, then compare them with the depth and height on this page. Send us the numbers and a photo and we will check it with you before you order.
How long will it take?
Every piece is built after you order it, in the hide you choose, so nothing sits in stock. It takes 12 to 14 weeks to build from when your hide is confirmed, then it ships to you.
Do you deliver to me?
We deliver Australia-wide, including Tasmania. Freight is quoted by postcode: pop yours into the delivery estimate above.
How do I pay?
You pay at checkout when you order, by card or with Latitude interest free over 12 months. Afterpay, Zip and Klarna are also available. Each provider sets its own approval and limit.
Can I get a custom size?
Small changes to the width, depth or height can be quoted. A bigger change is a new frame, with a design fee from $800. We do not make recliners or swivel chairs. Call +61 2 7248 6718 and a specialist will price your size.
What is the frame made of?
Kiln-dried hardwood, joined with mortise-and-tenon joints and corner blocks.
Is it covered by warranty?
Yes. Every Rumpus piece carries a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defect.
How do I look after it?
Dust it with a soft dry cloth. Blot spills straight away, then wipe with a cloth only just damp with plain water. Skip household sprays, wipes and steam cleaners. Condition it every few months and keep it out of direct sun.
