The word hides three very different things.
The same label covers the best hide you can buy and the worst. This is the difference between a piece you hand down and one you replace.
Top-grain
The strong top cut of the hide, its real grain showing. Dyed deep so it wears in, not off, and it develops a patina instead of peeling.
Top-grain, corrected
The surface is sanded smooth, then a fake grain is printed and sealed on top. Uniform and cheaper, but the coating wears, cracks and peels. It cannot patina.
Bonded “leather”
Leftover scraps ground to a pulp, glued to a fabric backing and sprayed to look like hide. Often under 20% leather, sold as the real thing.

Whole hides, chosen by hand for the seat panels, and the same leather on every surface of the piece, front and back.
Kiln-dried hardwood frame
Mortise-and-tenon joints with corner blocks, sinuous steel springs over webbing. No particle board, no staples into chipboard. A frame you reupholster, not replace.
Hand-finished, made to order
Deep buttons pulled and tied, seams stitched and nail-head trim set by hand. Nothing sits in a warehouse. Yours is built in 12–14 weeks.

The scratches are the point.
Corrected and bonded leather is at its best the day it arrives, then goes downhill. Top-grain is the opposite. Light, oils and years of use pull the colour deeper and rub the surface to a soft sheen. What looks like wear on a cheaper hide reads as character on this one.

Common questions
Is it real leather?
Yes. Every Rumpus piece is upholstered in top-grain leather with a semi-aniline finish: the outer layer of the hide, with the surface lightly sanded and finished so it wears evenly. It is not bonded leather or PU, the glued and coated materials many “leather” sofas are actually made from.
How long does it take to make?
Every piece is made to order in the hide you choose, so allow 12–14 weeks from when your hide is confirmed. Nothing is pulled off a warehouse shelf.
Can I see the colours before I buy?
Yes. Book a call and a specialist will talk you through the hides and can send photographs of the exact leather in natural light, so you can see how it reads before you commit.
What about delivery, and does it come assembled?
It arrives built, so there is nothing to assemble. We ship Australia-wide to your door, and freight is quoted separately for your postcode. Book a call and a specialist will confirm the cost and timing.
Will it really last?
The frame is solid hardwood, kiln-dried, with mortise-and-tenon joints. The leather takes marks and deepens with use, which is the leather working, not a fault. Every piece carries a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defect.
